How to configure Google Mail Exchange on your domain

Gmail is one of the most popular email services, so this tutorial will concentrate on creating MX Records using Google's default mailing servers.

Google gives users five mail servers and assigns each one a priority level. They are:

  • ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM > Priority 1
  • ALT1.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM -> Priority 5
  • ALT2.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM -> Priority 5
  • ALT3.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM -> Priority 10
  • ALT4.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM -> Priority 10

Your mail will go to the server with the lowest priority using default priority settings. ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM is the most common server. This is because it has a priority Level of 1.

Mail will be routed if the available server is unavailable. They will be sent randomly to ALT1 or ALT2 since they have the same priority.
